One Beat at a Time

A Beautiful Saturday Morning, A Beat for a Cause

A beautiful Saturday morning.
Rushing to a serene, shady patch of a park…
Meeting like-minded folks who believe in music, rhythm, solidarity, and most importantly — the cause, the goal, the vision.

Unloading the drums, tightening the instrument called Tashya under the crisp Florida sun, in a lush green patch of grassy field.

Bringing over big drums known as Dhol and the relatively smaller — but powerful — melody driver, Tashya, all the way from India was definitely costly and full of challenges. But it was worth every effort and every penny.

Alongside these two main leads, we have two more core instruments: Zhanj and Lezim.
The former acts like a metronome, while the latter brings dance and rhythm together — creating a truly wholesome experience.

The Many Benefits of Drumming

Playing any musical instrument has immense benefits, both physical and mental — especially with traditional instruments like Dhol, Tashya, Zhanj, and Lezim. Here's why:

Mental & Emotional Benefits

  • Stress Relief: Drumming helps you forget your worries. It calms your mind and works like moving meditation.
  • Mood Booster: Percussion releases endorphins — the feel-good hormones — making you feel lighter and happier.
  • Improves Focus & Concentration: Playing in a group requires sharp attention and rhythm, boosting your brain function.
  • Supports Brain Health:
Drumming may boost BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), a molecule that supports learning, memory, and neuroplasticity.

Physical Benefits

  • A Great Workout: Drumming improves cardiovascular health, stamina, and muscle tone.
  • Better Coordination: It sharpens motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Faster Reflexes: Your reaction times get better the more you drum.

Musical & Social Benefits

  • Sharpens Rhythm & Timing: Essential for every musician.
  • Builds Team Spirit: These instruments sync beautifully when played together — teaching collaboration and harmony.
  • Boosts Creativity: Freestyling encourages imagination and confidence.
  • Enhances Empathy & Adaptability: Live performances teach us to read the room and work with others fluidly.

Beyond Music — A Mind-Body-Spirit Journey

Drumming with Dhol, Tashya, Zhanj, and Lezim is not just music.

It’s:

  • A journey into ancient tradition
  • A boost to your physical and mental wellbeing
  • A path to human connection and healing

It’s About Spreading Humanity

Yes, you read that right.

In today’s divided world — we drum to unite.

We drum so a mother doesn’t put her kids to bed hungry.
We drum for a father who dreams of his daughter’s future.
We drum so underserved kids get food, clothes, and education.
We drum to support nonprofits that heal and rebuild.

At Guru Garjana, we don’t just perform.
We drum with purpose. We drum for a cause.
